The Yarra Valley Railway - Volunteer Organisation

Did you know – The Yarra Valley Railway is run solely by volunteers? From ticket sellers, to drivers, the track and train maintenance teams, all works to keep this community based group running are done by volunteers.

The YVR is a not-for-profit community organisation. All members of the YVR are passionate about preserving the rich railway history of the Yarra Valley and sharing it with visitors, tourists and the local community.

All proceeds from ticket sales is used by the YVR to support all of our volunteer operations and projects including:

  • Operating and maintaining the Walker Railmotor
  • Restoring and maintaining the railway bridges and track on which we run
  • General operating costs such as insurances and utilities
  • Restoration projects run by Volunteers to restore additional vintage railway carriages, equipment and locomotives
  • Restoration of heritage buildings such as Healesville Station and the recently fully restored Yarra Glen Station

The Volunteers of the YVR are currently undertaking the largest volunteer infrastructure project in Australia – the restoration of the rail corridor between Yarra Glen and Healesville. This will enable the YVR to extend the current Volunteer operated Walker Railmotor train rides all the way from Healesville to Yarra Glen, linking these two communities by railway once again.

So please buy a train ticket, come and see the Yarra Valley Railway, talk to a Volunteer – and help us preserve history!
