“The process of driving the Walker is very similar to driving any diesel locomotive, but better because you are right there with the passengers. You can see how much joy the passengers get from the train ride, how much they appreciate your time as a volunteer. I find that very rewarding” – John, Walker Railmotor Driver

All Drivers and Guards at the Yarra Valley Railway are Volunteers. The YVR offers a very comprehensive training program to all eligible volunteers. All costs of training are covered by the YVR.

“I started off qualifying as a Guard on the Walker Railmotor. Now I’m a qualified Driver. The YVR has qualified trainers and examiners who help you at every stage. They go through all of the theory and there is plenty of days organised for practical experience. You really don’t need to have any experience to start” – John, Walker Railmotor Driver

“It’s the passenger interaction I like the best. The passengers are always so interested in the YVR, that the Walker was fully restored by Volunteers. When we reach Tarrawarra Estate, before we head back to Healesville, I always point out the rest of the track. The YVR is a growing organisation, we are expanding. I think the passengers really get a sense of how much work our Volunteers put into the railway when they see the new bridges in the distance.” – Phil, Walker Railmotor Guard and Driver

“The Guard position has a bit of theatrics to it – with the whistle and flag. Plus calling out “Tickets Please!”.  That’s part of the history we are keeping alive at the YVR, the history of the Victorian Railways.” – Sam, Walker Railmotor Guard
